NOTICE OF TYPING CERTIFICATE
Applications submitted without the required certifications will be incomplete and not considered.
You must attach a copy of a typing certificate to this application which demonstrates your ability to type 35 net words per minute. The certificate must be dated no more than 1 (one) year prior to the date of your application for this position. The certificate must show that the test was administered for 5 (five) minutes or more and indicate the (1) gross words per minute, (2) number of errors, and (3) net words per minute.
NOTICE OF BACKGROUND PROCESS
This position is with the Department of Public Safety and requires the following additional screening: background investigation, polygraph, and psychological suitability assessment. Sensitive and/or confidential aspects of your personal life will be explored during this phase of the process.
NOTICE OF WRITTEN EXAM DATE
April 4 or 5, 2017
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the City of Las Vegas. The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
The LEST written examination is a fifty (50) item multiple-choice test which has questions on reading comprehension, data comprehension, and written communication (spelling, grammar, and clarity). You will have 90 minutes to complete the test. The city of Las Vegas does not recommend any specific study guide for this test.
NOTICE TO CLARIFY WORK EXPERIENCE
This position requires two (2) years of work experience which includes all of the following: data entry, record keeping or clerical experience, computer data input and retrieval, and cash handling.
This experience can be obtained over various positions you have held. It is IMPORTANT to specifically note this experience on your application for each applicable position, as well as in the supplemental questions.
- EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Position Summary
Processes inmates through the city's detention center, including processing arrest documents, performing criminal information searches, processing bail and bond transactions, coordinating sentencing information with courts, and processing releases. Provides inmate and warrant information to the general public.
Supervision Received
Receives general supervision from the Law Enforcement Support Supervisor and other management staff.
Essential Functions:
- Retrieves and inputs inmates' criminal and personal information in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and other appropriate criminal justice databases; processes information obtained from arrest documents and inmate interviews; distributes booking information to appropriate departments and, if applicable, to other law enforcement agencies.
- Maintains and verifies a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing and other general clerical work.
- Processes warrant, bail and bond transactions including accepting and filing cash and related documentation, preparing and reviewing appropriate documentation, reports, and bank deposits, and explaining bail posting options and procedures.
- Coordinates activity and communication with federal, state and local law enforcement and correctional agencies pertaining to inmate detainment and release.
- Coordinates court activity with staff of the city's Municipal Court including sentencing information and provides administrative support to the Municipal Court as necessary.
- Enters and validates warrants.
- Records, secures and releases inmates' property and money.
- Answers inquiries from citizens, attorneys and representatives from city departments and outside agencies regarding inmates and department operations, policies and procedures; provides authorized information.
- Maintains confidentiality and security of documents and inmate information in accordance with state law and department rules and regulations.
Marginal Functions:
- Assists correctional staff with inmate identification functions.
- Notarizes documents as required.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Experience:
Two years of experience that includes all of the following:
Data entry;
Record keeping or clerical experience;
Computer data input and retrieval; and
Cash handling.
Experience in the field of law enforcement or criminal justice is desirable.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must type 35 net words per minute, as demonstrated by a typing certificate dated no more than one year prior to the date of application.
Possession of an appropriate, valid notary public license within 6 months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
Must attend training and pass test required by FBI National Crime Information Center within six months of date of appointment, and proficiency must be affirmed every two years thereafter by the designated Terminal Agency Coordinator.
Special Requirements
The Department of Detention and Enforcement operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Assigned work schedule may change and may be for any shift and any day of the week.
Unforeseen scheduling events may require the extension of a normal work shift, up to an additional full shift, with little or no advance notice.
Verbal fluency in Spanish is desirable.
