Fire Communications Technician I (X)

To perform skilled maintenance, repair, removal and installation of fire station digitized vocal system, amplifiers, fire department vehicle communication systems, David Clark intercom, sirens, mobile data terminals, automatic vehicle location equipment; to provide solutions for problems on all systems serviced; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Fire Communications Technician I:  This is the journey level classification in the Fire Communications Technician series.  This class is distinguished from the Fire Communications Technician II by the performance of the full range of tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series, typically with closer supervision.
Fire Communications Technician II:  This is the advanced journey level class in the Fire Communications Technician series.  Positions at this level are distinguished from the Fire Communications Technician I by the level of responsibility assumed, the complexity of duties assigned, and the independence exercised.  Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned.  Employees are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Fire Communications Technician I:
Receives general supervision from the Fire Communications Supervisor.
Fire Communications Technician II:
Receives general supervision from the Fire Communications Supervisor.
May exercise functional and technical supervision over Fire Communications Technician I staff.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential Functions:
  1. Install, repair, maintain and remove fire vehicle mobile data terminals, mobile computer terminals, automatic vehicle location equipment and remote repeater site equipment, update system identification of units and adjust projection screen display.
  2. Install, repair, maintain and remove fire station communication systems, including amplifiers, digitized vocal system, radio vocal system and speakers; perform minor telephone repairs.
  3. Install, repair, maintain and remove fire vehicle sirens, David Clark communication systems, opticoms and vehicle external battery charging equipment.
  4. Operate circuit testing equipment, aerial lift equipment, small power tools, hand tools and related equipment.
  5. Troubleshoot communication systems for both fire station and fire vehicle systems and perform scheduled maintenance; bring any regulatory, specification or procedural infractions into compliance.
  6. Read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings and related symbols and markings.
  7. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  8. Adhere to all related codes, regulations, specifications and procedures for duties assigned including obtaining required permits.  Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  9. Respond to communication emergencies during evenings and weekends.
Marginal Functions
  1. Estimate time, materials and equipment required to complete assigned jobs, requisition materials as required; verify manifests upon receipt and inspect materials delivered by vendors; move materials in storage.
  2. Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Fire Communications Technician I:
Experience:
Five years of increasingly responsible communication systems experience.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by specialized training in the electronics field.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application.

Fire Communications Technician II:

Experience:
Six years of increasingly responsible communication systems experience including two years of experience with mobile data terminals and automatic vehicle location systems.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by specialized training in the electronics field.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a radio or communications technician certification meeting recognized industry standards on the date of application.

In addition to the qualifications for Fire Communications Technician I:
Knowledge of:
Practices and procedures used in the installation, maintenance and repair of mobile data terminals, mobile computer terminals, automatic vehicle location equipment and remote repeater site equipment.
UHF, VHF and microwave transmitting and receiving systems.
Ability to:
Troubleshoot and solve problems on all components of automatic vehicle location systems.
Independently perform skilled installation, maintenance and repair work of automatic vehicle location systems.
